Steven Alker wins the Utah Championship – Golf news
Steven Alker parred the first extra hole in the sudden-death playoffs of the Utah Championship Presented by Utah Sports Commission, to secure the third Web.com Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, July 14, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the Willow Creek Country Club, featuring some of the best players on the Web.com Tour.
Entering the final round, Alker was trailing the overnight leader Chad Collins by two strokes and was holding the second spot on the leaderboard.
Meanwhile, when Collins managed to record just a two-under par score on day four, Alker took advantage of the scenario and fired a five-under par 66 and surged to the top of the leaderboard.
Ashley Hall, in the meantime, also displayed amazing game on the course and posted a brilliant 6-under par 65, which allowed him to stand alongside Alker on top of the leaderboard.
As a result, both the players entered into the sudden-death playoffs, where Hall failed to keep the momentum going and conceded a bogey on the first extra hole. Alker, on the other hand, saved the par and comfortably took home the prestigious title.
Talking to the reporters after raising the trophy, Alker expressed his pleasure in tasting success on the tour and said that he will try his best to finish the season on a high note, in a bid to secure his card for the 2013-2014 PGA Tour season.
“Well obviously it changes my schedule a little bit in terms of what I play the rest of the year and where I’m sitting and my focus,” Alker said. “Obviously the focus is always PGA Tour and to get up in the top 25. It’s been a little bit of a struggle this
year. I haven’t played in a lot of tournaments, and this changes things. It’s pretty huge and it was kind of hard out there to not think about it. I just kept my head down and put the blinkers on.”
According to him, he will try maintaining consistency in his game in the upcoming tournaments he is scheduled to participate in, to maintain his position among the top-25 players in the money list.
