Steven Anderson banned for St Johnstone
Steven Anderson was banned for one game after he received two yellow cards at Tannadice in the Scottish Premier League match with Dundee United.
The Saint Johnstone defender stayed on the pitch after referee Brian Winter forgot that he had already booked the player.
Dundee United won the match 1-0 and it was only after the game that Anderson was given the ban by the Scottish Football Associations disciplinary committee.
Anderson will miss St Johnstone’s visit to Inverness on 16 October after the club accepted the decision.
Anderson was sent off earlier in the season against Hearts at Tynecastle on the first day of the season. He has passed a disciplinary points total and will now also miss the match against Hamilton.
The Saint Johnstone manager Derek McInnes said, “Once we heard that the committee were meeting, I felt the ban was inevitable and it was the outcome I was expecting."
McInnes added, "I think they feel that they have to be seen to do the right thing. The referee has deemed that Steven should receive two yellow cards and a one-match ban is the normal punishment for that.”
"All I would add is that I didn't think Steven deserved to be booked twice. The first yellow card was very soft and I am far from convinced that there was contact with their player. However, the fact is he was booked and we have to accept it."
Winter will now referee the second division game between Ayr and Livingstone after his high profile mistake. However, the referee has not been the first to caution a player twice and fail to send him off in the league.
Jim Duncan forgot to send off Jim Bett of Aberdeen in a match with Rangers, while English referee Graham Poll booked a player three times in the World Cup.
