Steven Burke and Jess Varnish win first day of British Track Championships 2011 - Cycling Update
The British track and road cyclists Steven Burke showed a brilliant performance in the individual Pursuit and took first place in the British Track Championships 2011 on Wednesday, September 28.
In the final kilometres, Burke gained a lead of five seconds ahead of Sam Harrison and claimed the National Champion jersey. Jonathan Dibben tried his best to take a lead in the final one kilometre and put pressure on Dewey. Nonetheless, Dibben finally built
a gap and finished third ahead of Dewey and Owain Doull.
Olympic Bronze Medallist Burke showed some good ability and set the fastest time of 4 hours, 23 minutes and 96 seconds. Previously, Burke also took first place in the Individual pursuit, European U-23 Track Championships and Kilo, British National Track
Championships in 2009.
In the Para-cycling time trial Jon Allen Butterworth also set an excellent time and broke the World record for the Kilo to secure the British National title. Aileen McGlynn - Helen Scott were in the runner-up spot and Neil Fachie - Barney Storey finished
third while Mazyar Ossmisaeed was disqualified from the stage.
In the Women’s category, Jess Varnish who is the World team sprint Silver Medallist also showed a tremendous performance in the first stage of the British National Championships. The 20-year-old English track racing cyclists covered the distance of the 500
metres time trial in 34.500.
In the final kilometres, Rebecca James was the only one cyclist who was able to catch Varnish but James failed to hold her pace and grabbed second spot taking the Silver medal. Laura Trott was in third place with a time of 35.980 ahead of Dani King.  
Previously, she grabbed runner-up spot in the British National Sprint Championships with another cyclist Helen Scott. She also won the Keirin and time trial Junior European Track Championships in 2008.
Rosie Blount, Wendy Houvenaghel and Jessica Crampton were in eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively.
The next Men’s points race Kilo and Women’s individual pursuit, Para Flying will start tomorrow as all the cyclists will cover the distance of 200 metres. It will be exciting to see who wins the next British Track Championships Title.
