Steven Defour hints at a possible move to Old Trafford
Standard Liege youngster Steven Defour says he is yet to be approached over a move to Manchester United but is aware the Old Trafford club is scouting him.
United has reportedly been tracking the 22-year-old since he was a teenager but a bad break in his foot at the start of the year has stopped any transfer from taking place.
"I know Manchester United are
closely monitoring my situation. There hasn't been any official contact yet though.
I've been sidelined for quite a while due to injury, but I'm playing at a high level again. The chance that I'll leave the club is rather big if I continue to play
like I currently do," said Defour.
Defour could be exactly the sort of player that Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for now that key midfielder Paul Scholes is at the very edge of retiring from the game.
Makes sense
It would make sense for Defour to move to Manchester United because there is clear interest in him from the club. He would also benefit from the experience and guidance
from arguably the greatest manager the world has ever seen.
Defour suggests that had he not got injured then the move may have already taken place. The transfer would have been playing on his mind and he'll be brimming with enthusiasm
and energy to play in the Premier League.
However, it's important to remember that he is still a Standard Liege player with commitments in Belgium. The Belgian club is not going to let him go easily and United
will most likely have to pay top price for him.
"I've had the opportunity to leave Standard on more than one occasion
in the past couple of seasons, but I loved the club too much to leave. However, I'm 22 years old now and I also have to think about myself.
There comes a time when you just have to make the next step in your career," he added.
