Steven Defour waiting for Manchester United
22 year old Belgian midfielder Steven Defour told reporters that he was certain Manchester United were interested in him, but said that they were yet to contact him about a possible move. The youngster also stated that he was ready
to leave Standard Liege and was waiting for some contact from Old Trafford.
Defour is an excellent prospect and Manchester United have been linked with the player for some time now, and with the uncertainty of Owen Hargreaves’ future with the club, Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on bringing in the Belgian midfielder.
Ferguson has been following Defour for over a year now; the Belgian claims that the Manchester United boss sent him a letter of encouragement when he broke his foot. The incident took place last September and sources reveal that
Ferguson has maintained his interest since then.
Defour admitted that he would like nothing more than a big move, and that too to Manchester United. He said that a move to Old Trafford was his top priority but the club had failed to make a move as yet and he was getting impatient.
Defour told reporters, “I know that Manchester United are closely monitoring my situation. There hasn't been any official contact yet though, I've been sidelined for quite a while due to injury, but I'm playing at a high level
again. The chance that I'll leave the club is rather big if I continue to play like I currently do.”
He added, “I've had the opportunity to leave Standard on more than one occasion in the past couple of seasons, but I loved the club too much to leave. However, I'm 22 years old now and I also have to think about myself. There comes
a time when you just have to make the next step in your career, regardless of sentiments for any club.”
The player made his debut in professional football when he was 16 years old and has already made some 24 appearances for his country, scoring one goal so far. In 2007 he was voted the most valuable player in the Belgian League
and has also captained Standard Liege in their European fixtures.
