Steven Diez edges past Kamil Pajkowski into the second round – Challenger of Granby 2011 CH
In the all-Canadian affair, which took place in Tuesday afternoon at Granby, Canada, Steven Diez defeated Kamil Pajkowski in the opening round of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby.
The two Canadian players fought hard for one hour and forty eight minutes before Diez finally took down his fellow compatriot in straight sets 7-6(8), 6-2, to make a place in the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Challenger Tour event.
The contest appeared pretty evenly posed initially, with both men labouring extremely hard to come out as the winner but a substantial momentum swing was witnessed in the second set, which changed the course of the game in no time.
Pajkowski dropped the opener in a tie breaker round after a stiff contest but tend to lose his way through the second set, submitting the match in straight sets to end his voyage at the Challenger of Granby.
20-year-old Diez took off the opener with aggression but Pajkowski replied with the same to heat up the contest. Diez earned 20 out of 29 first serve points on his 71 per cent precise serve, whereas Pajkowski followed him with
14 out of 22 points and 42 per cent first serve accuracy. Both men exchanged some assertive winners right at the start to get the better of one another and kept the score board moving on even terms.
Diez was the first one to register a serve break in the matchup to lead 4-3 but Pajkowski replied after a couple of games to level the scores at 6-6. A mandatory tie breaker round was called in the game and more intense tennis
was witnessed from both contestants. The decider was stretched to a total of 18 points before a critical mini-break from Diez gave him a chance to close out the set, which he actually did at 7-6(8), to get one up in the contest.
Dejected Pajkowski failed to put up the similar fight as he did in the first set and dropped his game all of a sudden. He held serve in just two games and suffered tow cracking serve breaks from his opponent to let him fly away
to victory. Diez sealed victory at 6-2 to book a berth in the second round of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby.
Diez will have to wait to find his second round competitor, as the clash between the other two Canadians, the eighth seed Vasek Pospisil and the wildcard, Zachary White, is yet to be settled on Wednesday.
