Steven Finn says Andy Flower is fine after skin surgery
The England team soldiered on without head coach, Andy Flower, on the second and third day of the Ashes opener at the Gabba as Andy underwent a surgery to remove a cancerous growth in his right cheek on Friday.
But Steven Finn, the spearhead English pacer, revealed today that the coach is fine after a successful operation.
"Andy's fine, he's pulling through but it hasn't drawn away from anything that we've done as a team over the last couple of days", Finn said.
According to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officials, the forty-two year old England coach observed the melanoma in his right cheek last week and underwent a minor skin surgery in a local Brisbane hospital yesterday where the
cancerous growth was successfully removed.
The surgery forced Andy to miss the second day game of the ongoing Gabba Test and he missed the third day as well as he was advised a post-surgery rest, an ECB spokesman said.
The team spokesman said, "He went off for a routine check and they said they felt it prudent to take it out. He may well be back soon. As far as he is concerned, it is business as usual".
In the absence of Andy Flower, the fielding coach Richard Halsall has been given the charge of stand-in coach.
"We have got highly capable backroom staff who are helping out and we'll gel together as a unit and I think the way we do gel together helps us in times like this", said the fast bowler.
Finn further added that the performance of team was not affected by Andy’s absence as the side was aware of the fact that they would have to marshal in the ground without their coach backing them from the dressing room in the next couple
of days so they kept their focus on things. Finn was hopeful that Andy would be around in the next couple of days.
Finn returned with his career best figures of 6 for 125 on the third day of the Gabba Test as Ponting’s men scored a massive first innings total of 481 in reply to England’s 261.
