Steven Gerrard: Liverpool deserved point against Manchester United
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard insisted today that his side deserved at least a point from their English Premier League clash with Manchester United.
The Reds captain grabbed a brace in yesterday’s match through a penalty and a free-kick to restore parity after Dimitar Berbatov scored twice. But Liverpool left Old Trafford empty-handed after Berbatov scored his third goal late in the game for a final
score of 3-2.
Gerrard told reporters that he felt Liverpool deserved to leave Manchester with something to show from their efforts after coming back from two goals down.
He said that, "I think when you recover a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford you feel really good and you fancy yourself to hang on in there and get a fantastic point. But Berbatov completed his hat-trick — he was the difference and his second goal was world
class. We're disappointed with the result, but really pleased with how we played and disappointed to go away with nothing."
The England international scored his second goal after Fernando Torres was fouled by John O’Shea just outside the penalty area. Gerrard stepped up to take the free-kick, and the Liverpool man was able to slip the ball through the gap and score.
Gerrard admitted that he was a bit lucky that it had found its way into Edwin van der Sar’s net. He said that, “I saw how he [Van der Sar] set the wall up and the idea was for me to try to get it over. But you see so many free-kicks where walls break or
they go through gaps and if you hit the target you get your reward and I got that."
Liverpool’s pursuit of a top-four finish will continue when their next EPL fixture sees them face in-form Sunderland at home on Saturday.
