http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 revealed that he was not concerned about Wayne Rooney’s behaviour on the field going into the match against Ukraine on Tuesday, insisting that the striker has learnt his lesson after completing his two-match suspension.
The mercurial player from Manchester United was sent off during the Three Lions Euro qualifier against Montenegro, with Uefa subsequently meting out a 2-match penalty on Rooney for his reckless challenge on Miodrag Džudović. The punishment barred him from
appearing in his country’s opening two matches against France and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032 after serving out his suspension.
However, the temperamental player who was also shown a red card in England’s World Cup quarterfinal defeat against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 in 2006, got the backing from his captain, who believes that the only thing which will be on Rooney’s mind ahead of the game is to
help his country make it into the quarterfinals.
He also indicated that the striker does not need any lecturing as to how to go about in the crucial fixture, as he is a world class player with all the experience in the world.
While talking to reporters, he said: “I'm not going to tell Wayne not to be fired up for this game. That is what Wayne is all about, pressing, being aggressive in the right way. The reason he is world class is because of what he has shown up to today.”
The Three Lions will square off against Ukraine on Tuesday, knowing that a draw will be enough to hand them a place into the last eight of the competition. However, given they end up short against the co-hosts, their fate will not remain in their own hands,
as they will then rely on the outcome of the Sweden http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 game.
Gerrard acknowledged the importance of the match against Ukraine and thinks that Rooney, who is regretful of his action against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Montenegro-c2959, will be desperate to make amends and will be the key for his country’s progression to the next round.
He added, “Obviously we need him on the pitch. He is aware of that and he regrets the reaction when he got the suspension. I am sure he will behave himself well.”
