Steven Gerrard - Time has come to Attack and Conquer the Cup
The time has come for the prodigal sons to return to their throne is what Steven Gerrard thinks about this World Cup. The world-class ace has confessed that it’s time for the ‘golden generation’ of the English football to step up to the challenge and win the FIFA World Cup 2010.
The striking midfielder says that this is one of the best squads assembled in recent times and with the aim to triumph the English team will enter this tournament and end the curse of England in the World Cup. He has certainly got that right; the English haven’t seen anything short of bad luck since their title achieving run back in 1966.
Gerrard is the pivot of the English midfield and attack right now and has been since, so with his debut for the Three Lions in 2000. He made a recent confession though; admitting that with him turning 30 the time for the achievement during his period is quickly wearing out. He told; the time for the English to win major international trophies was near and he was out there to get them.
The 44 years since England’s last win in 1966 has been marked with examples of sheer misfortune and disappointment. Gerrard believes that this World Cup is the best place to finally abolish this curse and pave a new way into a brighter future. After all, the tournament does represent the best nation in football and the best players.
Gerrard is fully focused to get this Cup and while talking to the media he said, “If I want to win a World Cup, I’m going to have to do it soon.” Who knows that this might be the last time the legendary team is all together.
Gerrard however was extremely confidently optimistic about his future career. He said, “But I’m in good shape and I’ve still got five years to fight for the top prizes in football”.
Then Gerrard came to a more serious note saying, “I don’t know if this will be my last World Cup but I want to give it everything. We’ve (England’s current crop of players) been together for a long time, so I don’t think there are any excuses for us anymore”. Indeed there has been an exponential climb in the country’s football but the fraternity of the golden players have failed time and again to impress the world with their class.
Gerrard was well aware of this fact when he stated, “It’s time to deliver. The team is winning and confidence is high, but we still have some improving to do if we want to go all the way”.
Being riddled with hardship and trouble in the past; the last World Cup of 2006 was no less when the English team got run out facing the Portuguese on penalties. This wasn’t the first time though that the English have faced trouble being at the penalty spot. It in fact has led to their downfall many times in the past. Having one of the best strikers in the world and one of the best goal keepers even the critics come to think that this has to be a curse travelling with time. In 2006 Gerrard was among three players that missed their chance for the Three Lions in the quarter-final when they were defeated by Portugal.
The Reds skipper however wants to be in those shoes again when the time comes and as far as this Cup goes he wants to mend the mistakes he made the last time.
He said, “Of course I’d take one. Missing a penalty in the quarter-final in 2006 was the loneliest place in the world, and I want to put it right”. He then added, ‘It’s bad enough losing, but to feel responsible for a loss is the worst kind of failure”.
With him realizing the story unfolding half of the work is done. The rest of the half is for the English team to make history. They so far have given below average performance this season. Ironically in fact the fate seems to be on their side this time with their close encounters such as the one with Japan. They definitely want the winds to turn as one promise from them will be clear, they will give on their usual dramatic show.
