Steven Gerrard rues missed chances against Wigan Athletic
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said he was to take the blame after his team failed to defeat Wigan Athletic in the Premier League on Wednesday, 10 November.
Gerrard, who hit a precise through ball for Fernando Torres to open Liverpool's account with seven minutes gone, missed a shot in the 16th minute after a neat exchange with Dirk Kuyt.
"I tried to play a one-two that, if it had come off, could have been a good move," Gerrard told reporters after the game.
The 30-year-old also hit the bar after being played through by Maxi Rodriguez in the 79th minute.
"Then when I went through on goal, I maybe struck my shot too well, but I should have scored — I expected to. As we haven't taken maximum points, maybe people should point a finger at me."
Not all bad for Liverpool
But the skipper, whose team are up from 13th to 9th place in the league and only trail fifth-placed Newcastle United by one point, said things are looking up for Roy Hodgson's team.
"Besides those things, I'm happy with my form. After a fantastic win over Chelsea and having gone 1-0 up, of course we understand why people will be slightly disappointed," the Englishman said, adding that the team's tight playing schedule may have taken
the edge off their performance on Wednesday.
"Maybe our performance suffered after the energy and intensity we put into beating Chelsea. You can often find that happening after you play a game 72 hours after a big fixture. But we have kept our unbeaten run going [to six games in all competitions],
Fernando has got another goal and there are other positives."
Liverpool's last defeat came against local rivals Everton on 17 October. Roy Hodgson's team have been helped by Torres' form, with the striker scoring three goals in the last two games.
On Saturday, 13 November, Liverpool travel to face Stoke City in the Premier League.
