Steven Gerrard thinks Liverpool deserved a point at Old Trafford

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, believes that his side deserved to get at least a point at Old Trafford, and it was unfortunate the way they ended up losing the match. Liverpool had been trailing 2 nil against Manchester United
and it was captain fantastic who got them back in the match with 2 goals. It was looking like another one of Gerrard’s resilient comeback performances, but sadly it was the home side that had the final laugh.
Fernando Torres was not able to make much of an impression in the match, but was still instrumental in both goals. It was his run that was halted by Johnny Evans that led to the penalty and later John O’Shea tackled him outside
the box that led to the free kick and the 2nd goal.
However it was the Bulgarian Berbatov who completed his hat trick and sealed the win for the home side with the 3rd goal in the 84th minute.
"I think when you recover a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford you feel really good and you fancy yourself to hang on in there and get a fantastic point," said Gerrard.
"But Berbatov completed his hat-trick - he was the difference and his second goal was world class.
"We're disappointed with the result but really pleased with how we played and disappointed to go away within nothing."
Whenever Liverpool is behind there is always one man the whole team looks up to. The captain Steven Gerrard more times than not does come up with the goods. In the famous Champions League final back in 2005 against AC Milan, Liverpool
were trailing 3-0, and it was Gerrard who knocked in the first with his head and won the penalty that got them level before winning the final on penalties.
He admitted, the free kick through which he got the 2nd goal at Old Trafford did have an element of luck, but still it does not take anything away from his precision.
"I saw how he (Edwin van der Sar) set the wall up and the idea was for me to try to get it over," he added.
"But you see so many free-kicks where walls break or they go through gaps and if you hit the target you get your reward and I got that."
Gerrard went on to say that it was one of those times in football where you can give your best and still come up short. The England captain said that Liverpool had thoroughly deserved the point and the manner in which they ended
up losing the match was heartbreaking. The midfielder said that looking at the big picture maybe his team did not play up to their potential and could have done better and Berbatov could have been covered much better in the box.
Gerard said that “a player like Berbatov is very unpredictable and can come up with moments of brilliance without being noticed in a match”.. “the defence was probably more focused on marking and covering Wayne Rooney and that
is what gave Berba the edge”
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson was equally disappointed with the result; he said "I thought we came close to getting a point,"
"The merits of that would have been hotly debated; the Manchester United fans saying it was a steal and the Liverpool fans saying it was well deserved.
"To concede a third goal, when for half an hour we had not looked under that pressure, is hard to accept.
"You always know Manchester United is going to be a difficult game to come with away something.
"So my feelings are ones of great disappointment because we got so near after being 2-0 down, and that would have been something really worth having."
This is the 2nd defeat for Liverpool this season, after they had suffered a massive drubbing at the hands of Manchester City earlier.  Liverpool would have to go back to the drawing board now and reassess their plans
and get their priorities right. The Europa league is the only high profile trophy they are involved in and Hodgson will have to make sure he strikes a right balance between glory in Europe and 4th position at home.
