Steven Goh, Song Ling clear first hurdle in Australian Open qualifying round
The mixed doubles team of Australia, Steven Goh-Song Ling Ooi cleared their first hurdle in qualifying round of Yonex Australian Open GP Gold on April 3, 2012.
The couple of Steven-Song Ling tamed their compatriot duo Vincent Ng-Siao Yien Jasmine Yeo by registering final figures of 19-21, 21-15 and 21-18 in their opening match of the event.
Both teams snapped each other’s heels and sweat hard for 34 minutes to stamp their rival.
The opening game set the overall pace of the match which remained at peak until the last moment. Both opponents found their match in badminton skills and their show was a feast for the eyes as no one allowed the other to establish a decent lead until the
break.
After the interval, they still remained close on scoreboard until the duo of Vincent Ng-Siao Yien made the difference by scoring two consecutive points at 19-19 score position. They ended the set with 21-19 score in their favour.
The following game saw the couple Steven-Song Ling completely dominating as they registered few quick points straight away on scoreboard.
However, their opponents Vincent Ng-Siao Yien bounced back and remained toe-to-toe in the first half of the set.
The later half completely belonged to the partnership of Steven and Song Ling as they accelerated their pace and left behind their rivals with a significant six-point lead in the final total.
The victorious duo levelled the lead by earning second match point with 21-15 score on the board.
The best part of the match was yet to come as the spectacular show of skills by both Australian couples kept the spectators glued to their chairs in the third set. The crowd who was there to support the home team applauded the top class craft of the contestants.
Both couples put out all they had got as the loser was supposed to bid farewell to the event. The total 30 points, scored by the powerful smashes from both teams, was proof of attacking badminton that was played in the decider.
The duo of Vincent Ng and Siao Yien walked tall despite of losing to their compatriots Steven-Song Ling who sealed their victory with a tight yet decisive score of 21-18.
