Steven Jackson thinks St. Louis Rams can overcome Gregg Williams’ departure – NFL News
St. Louis Rams’ running back, Steven Jackson, seems unshaken by the departure of the team’s defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who was suspended indefinitely by the National Football League (NFL) for his involvement in the ‘bounty programme’ when he was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
Williams had recently joined Rams after parting ways with Saints and he was penalised without even getting a chance to coach his new team.
Although Jackson thinks that the penalty on Williams is a serious blow to the Rams, he also believes that the franchise’s head coach, Jeff Fisher, who brought Williams in, will be able to find his replacement or make alternative arrangements to ensure the team stays unaffected.
Luckily for the Rams, the league’s decision came during the offseason and they still have got plenty of time to consider different options before the start of the next season.
Jackson commented:
“It will be a blow. Luckily enough it's still early in the offseason that Coach Fisher can find a person, or a couple of people, that he wants to lean on for the defensive coordinator job or making a decision.”
He added:
“Right now I think it would go (as) smoothly as possible. ... It's a blow, of course. You know we hate that it happened, but I think it's early enough in the offseason that we can correct a wrong."
Earlier, an investigation carried out by the league had revealed that Williams used to entice players by offering them cash rewards if they knock their opponents out.
Following the investigative report, the league took a stern action and put an indefinite ban on Williams.
Not only that, the league also banned Saints’ head coach, Sean Payton, for one year. Also, general manager, Mickey Loomis, was handed over an eight-game suspension and assistant coach, Joe Vitt, was suspended for six games.
Furthermore, the franchise was also asked to pay a fine of $500,000.
After the league’s decision, Rams’ management accepted it and said that the team would not have hired Williams had it knew about the bounty programme.
Rams are hoping to get over this problem, but they should take some strong measures quite soon as they were already seen struggling on defence during the last NFL season and need to work on their flaws if they want to perform better in the next season.
