Steven Pienaar set to stay at Everton
Everton assistant manager Steve Round has revealed that Steven Pienaar is set to stay with the club for the remainder of the season.
The 28-year-old South Africa international had been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur that would have seen Peter Crouch move in the opposite direction. However, no such deal looks to have been discussed and with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp claiming he has no intention of allowing Crouch to leave, Pienaar looks as though he will remain on Merseyside.
When asked by reporters if there was any truth to the rumours, Rounds said that: "No, none at all. There has been no contact. The manager (David Moyes) has said all along he wants Steven to stay. He has signed with us, he is under contract and as far as we are concerned he will be an Everton player this season. There is no truth in the speculation. Steven has been a terrific player for us and is a terrific asset. We value him very highly."
Pienaar, who has less than a year left to run on his contract and would be allowed to leave for nothing next summer, said last week that he would be eager to extend his stay at Goodison Park if the deal makes sense for both parties. He told Click Liverpool that: "I'll be honest. I have a year left on my contract. I'm happy to sign a new one, but at my age it has to be right and fair. The only difference I've had with the club has been over what's right."
The winger arrived at Everton two years ago from Borussia Dortmund and has gone on to make 86 appearances in total for the club, scoring eight goals across all competitions. He was also named the club’s player of the season for his efforts in the last campaign.
