Steven Pienaar targets first league win against Birmingham City
Everton FC midfielder Steven Pienaar has backed his team to earn their first league victory of the season against Birmingham City when the sides meet on Saturday.
Despite being held as potential challenger to Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa for fourth place in the Premier League ahead of the season, David Moyes' team are last in the table with only three points from six games.
One of Everton's points was collected against Manchester United at Goodison Park, when the team fought back heroically to earn a 3–3 draw. After losing to Newcastle United, Everton earned another point away to Fulham last weekend.
"We went into the game at Fulham with clear heads and it was a big improvement on the Newcastle game," the South African told the Liverpool Daily Post. "We knew we let people down in that game and we did not show enough character."
Pienaar cut a lively figure on Everton's left wing against Fulham, and the midfielder said he believed their performance was a sign of better things to come.
"But we showed last week that we can play if we have 100 per cent focus – we are just lacking a goal at the moment. We have to build on the last game and make sure we play with the same confidence and with a bit more sharpness in front of goal we can win
there."
Birmingham also struggling
Birmingham's only league win this season came against Blackburn Rovers in August, but Pienaar said Everton will be tested by Alex McLeish's side at St. Andrew's.
"We all know Birmingham are a good team at home. They are well organised and the manager has them playing as a unit. It will be hard for us, but if we stick to our own game and play well then hopefully we can get the three points."
