Steven Reid Could Have Joined Celtic
West Bromich Albion defender, Steven Reid, has revealed that he would have joined Celtic in the Scottish Premier League if a move to his new club had not been possible.
Reid became a free agent at the end of last season and decided to sign for West Brom as it meant he would have the chance to play in the Premier League and prove his doubters wrong.
However, Reid has been troubled in recent times as he finds it difficult to recover from the smallest of injuries and his enthusiasm in the Premier League has sometimes been questioned. He has confirmed that had West Brom not made an approach then he would have moved to Celtic for a fresh start.
However, it's important to consider what his new move means and whether he can play a big part in helping West Brom fight off relegation as they are one of the main favourites at the moment to go back down into the Premier League.
Premier League Football
Reid says the main reason he signed for West Brom was because they have just been promoted into the Premier League. There are many people at Blackburn who have dismissed him as a top flight player and he will now have a chance to prove them wrong.
Reid is quick and agile, which makes him important in defensive areas. The main criticism of him at Blackburn was that he did not display these attributes consistently and his enthusiasm and ambition was not always high.
It's clear that Reid was getting ready for a possible move to Celtic and he seems to have been lifted by the West Brom interest, which resulted in a move. This could help him get some energy and enthusiasm back because he may not have been expecting to play in the Premier League ever again.
He said: "I would be lying if I said there wasn't an interest there (from Celtic) and I went up and had a look around - Had West Brom not been promoted, that could have made a difference and you want to play in Old Firm games."
A Better Move
There is no doubt at all that going to West Brom was a better move for the player than going to Celtic. Even though Celtic has European football, the quality of the Premier League is much higher and means that Reid will play against better players every week.
This is important for him if he wants to retire from the game in a blaze of glory. This looks as though it will be the last move of his career and he is not likely to get a chance of playing at international level.
There is no incentive at all for the player to do anything other than go all out to try and make an impression at West Brom and become one of the key figures in their team for next season. If he plays well then it will mean that West Brom has a very well organised defence and they will stand a better chance of winning or drawing games.
Betting Advice
Steven Reid is not a bad player but he thrives on form, belief and confidence. Watch him in the first few West Brom games of the Premier League season. If he is playing well then the club won't be conceding many games and you can back them more confidently.
However, the pre-season odds do not lie and if you think West Brom are going to go down then you will get better odds right now than if you wait until a later date.
