Steven Zimmerman claims Men’s 100m freestyle gold – YMCA Long Course Nationals, Atlanta, Georgia
Steven Zimmerman of Countryside-OH claimed the gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle meet, on day two of the 2011 Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Atlanta, Georgia.
He displayed his remarkable skills in the two-lap sprint and clinched the title of the event, by submitting a time of 56.47 seconds. He was just 0.09 seconds behind his own national mark of 56.38 seconds, set in 2010.
The 18-year-old Zimmerman maintained a lead of 1.60 seconds over his following swimmer, Kevin Rogers of Triangle Area-NC, who occupied the podium for the silver medal in a time of 58.07 seconds. He was followed by Nic Graesser of UpperMainLine-PA, who settled on the victory stand for the bronze medal, in a time of 58.27 seconds.
Next was Grant Alef of Kishwaukee-IL, who qualified into the final as the fifth fastest swimmer but improved his timing by 0.61 seconds to jump up to fourth spot. Alef posted a time of 58.37 seconds and was followed by his following swimmer, Davis Dylan of Anne Arundel-MD, who failed to sustain his fourth position and finished behind Alef in a time of 58.66 seconds.
Connor Maher of Cheshire-CT was the sixth position holder of the event, as she stayed 0.26 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and reported in a time of 58.92 seconds. Eric Forrester of Mon Valley-PA finished his swim in 59.28 seconds and surfaced as the seventh position holder. Graesser’s team-member, Tyler Rauth stayed just 0.38 seconds behind his former swimmer and emerged as the eighth finisher in a time of 59.66 seconds.
Aaron Athanas of North Shore-MA was the ninth fastest finisher of the freestyle event, as he clocked a time of 59.67 seconds. John Quagliariello was the last swimmer to conclude his sprint, as he reported in a time of 1 minute and 00.42 seconds.
Zimmerman was contented with his crown winning effort in the respective meet and expressed that he will try his best to continue to perform in the same manner in future events.
