Ever ask a family or friend whether or not something looks good on you?  Well, how often do you think they lie?  I think that's probably what King meant.  Friends and families will lie to you in order to not hurt your feelings, but enemies will tell you the truth, whether it hurts your feelings or not.

You're missing part of the quote.  The whole quote is:  Only enemies speak the truth; friends and lovers lie endlessly, caught in the web of duty.
