could help the club compete in the German top division.

The 43-year-old stated that he appreciates the job Stevens has done for the side during his tenure.
The general manager suggested that the coach always gave his best and did everything for the benefit of the Gelsenkirchen outfit. Nevertheless, the Freiburg loss was the final straw to axe the boss as the club felt that they could
no longer afford results like that in the Bundesliga.
"First of all, I'd like to thank Huub Stevens for the work he has done. He has always given his all for the club and acted in the interests of Schalke. However, after the performance against Freiburg we no longer had the necessary confidence that he could turn
things round,” he added.
The club official said he told Stevens about the sacking one-on-one last week, and he understood the decision. On the other hand, Jens Keller has been asked to fill-in for the former trainer. Jens has previously coached the Under-17
side and is expected to help the club out of this situation.
"I informed Huub of our decision at a personal meeting early on Sunday morning. He backs the decision," he mused.
