Steward: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather stories not good for boxing – Boxing News
While many fans and critics are of the view that the bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather would be boxing’s best to date, veteran boxing trainer Emanuel Steward dares to make a statement against it. According to him, boxing fans today just want the Mayweather-Pacquiao
fight to happen and they are least bothered about other matches while both the pugilists are busy thinking about making money, which indeed is hurting the sport.
He said, “Boxing's not in good shape. It's more of a business now and it's hurting boxing. We need to return to an era when the best fight the best and it wasn't all about money and egos. There's only one major fight the public is interested in - two little
fellas, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, who most likely will never fight. some drastic changes come about, I don't like the way things are looking for boxing. There's not one dream heavyweight fight - you've got Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko
and nobody else. That's not good.”
According to him, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are two big names in the industry and if they want they can fight. He added that the money is there for both of them but then their egos get hurt if one gets the bigger chunk. He said that they need to
keep their egos aside and make the fight happen for their fans.
According to Steward, they both can easily earn around $50 million but that is not what they are focusing on instead they want to get more than the other one.
To a certain extent, Steward’s comments make sense. If both of them would compromise or forget their egos for a while, the fight can easily happen. It should be noted here that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao both were in constant touch a month back
to discuss about the fight. However, it came down to nothing since Floyd wanted the entire pay-per-view proceedings while Manny was not okay with it. According to Manny, they both should get equal share of the proceedings since they both stand are of the same
calibre.
