Newly signed Liverpool winger Stewart Downing believes that the Reds have quality, strength and depth to mount a stronger challenge for the Barclays Premier League title. The Englishman also revealed that the Merseyside club’s preference would be to qualify
for the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League.
The English winger, who joined Liverpool from Aston Villa this summer, has stated that Liverpool deserve to play in elite European club competition. Downing insisted that the Kop and fans are expecting their team to at least win Champions League qualification,
and has asserted that the players are fully committed to finish in the top four of the Barclays Premier League.
Liverpool are the only English club to win the UEFA Champions League five times. Moreover, the Reds also the second most successful club in the English top flight with 18 premier league titles – Manchester United lead the race with 19.
However, Liverpool failed to qualify for the champions league in the past two seasons, and Downing has revealed that the every single member of the club is working hard to bring European football back at Anfield.
Kenny Dalglish has already splashed over £100 million to sign six new players since the January 2011 transfer window. Liverpool signed two strikers Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in the winter transfer window. Moreover, the Reds landed four more players in
the ongoing summer transfer market.
Downing believes that Liverpool’s current squad has all the attributes required to win the Premier League title next season.
The former Aston Villa winger told the reporters, "I think we've certainly got the squad now, there's a lot competition for places in a way there maybe hasn't been in the past, so I think it's got to be an aim.”
The 26-year-old reckons that Liverpool’s ultimate target should be to win the Barclays Premier League. The Merseyside club have failed to land a league title in the past 20 years. Downing believes that the building process for winning the title will take
some time and with new signings, the Reds will be able to deliver the crown in the near future.
"In the long term the ambition would be to win the league, it doesn't happen overnight, it's a building process and hopefully we've started it with the players Kenny's brought in this summer, along with the top players he already had,” the English winger
explained.

"I think we just need to start well, get the fans on side and have a right good go," Stewart Downing concluded.
Liverpool will not take part in any European competition next season and the Reds will begin their premier league campaign with a home fixture against Sunderland.
