England are currently without a manager and a captain, which has caused a number of players and experts to come forward and express their opinion on just who should take over for the team.
Downing, who is amongst the players to have been selected for the upcoming friendly against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753 believes that Steven Gerrard is the ideal candidate to become captain of the national team. While insisting, that the Liverpool captain should be given
the opportunity to lead England in the Euro’s.
Gerrard has already gone on to be named as captain for England on fifteen occasions in the past and hence he has all the experience needed to take over the role.
The Liverpool winger believes that Gerrard has been a phenomenal captain for Liverpool and if he manages to perform for the national team in the same manner as he does for Liverpool, he could help the team win the Euro 2012.
When talking about the prospect of Steven Gerrard becoming the captain of the national side, Downing is quoted to have said: "He's captained Liverpool for many years and done very well and if picked for England would do that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 well"
"He's a big player for Liverpool and England, has a great influence on England and drives teams on so if he is given the captaincy then great."
The attacker then went on to admit that he wasn’t certain whether Gerrard would retire from international football after the upcoming tournament, but claimed that he would like to see the midfielder stick around for as long as he possibly could.
"He certainly has [a lot to offer]," he said. "I've not spoken to Steven about if he will retire after the tournament. I'll be selfish and hope he stays on."
At the moment there has been no progress from the FA, as they look to find a new permanent manager for England. However, what can be said assuredly is that they are going to appoint someone to take charge of the national team, sooner rather than later.
