  1. On a hill you HAVE to apply the brake (while stopped) or the car will roll down the hill.  But don't use the clutch to keep the car from rolling backward - that's a bad habit.

And the gear, if it is REALLY steep hill, yes you leave it on first gear.  But most hill are not that steep and you should be able to shift into second and third.

    Good Luck...

  2. I'm not real sure what the first part of your question is asking... if you park on a steep hill, I would suggest you shift into first, turn off the car and use the parking brake. :) If you're just stopping for a light or a stop sign, though, yes, shifting into neutral and applying the brakes will work fine. When you get used to using the stick, though, try keeping your car in first and feathering the clutch and accelerator to keep in one spot though... makes for an easier getaway! :D

If you're going up a long hill, yes, shift. Keeping it in 1st will actually do more damage than good. Try using the rule of thumb: One gear for each 1000 rpm.

HAVE FUN! I love my stick shift, especially during our icy Kansas winters!

  3. Well, if you feel you need to shift gears so you don't stall, do it
