  1. Strength and swing speed are the two determining factors in the selection of a golf shaft. If one swings hard and has a speed that needs control, the stiff shaft will be the better choice. There is less flex( lateral give ) which keeps the hands in a good position on the swing plane  which will promote a repeatable swing. The regular flex ( more give to the shaft) helps the golfer with the slower swing by whipping the club head through the impact area thereby assisting the speed. With the introduction of the graphite shafts and the ability to grade shaft flexes into  sets with minute variations, todays clubs are more capable of being fitted properly to a golfer's swing speed than those of the past.


  2. It depends on your swing speed.  Go somewhere and have your swing measured.  Most better teaching pros have the equipment to measure the speed of your swing.  The higher the swing speed, the more likely you are to want stiffer shafts.
