Stiff the Delivery Guy?

8 weeks ago I moved to Chicago, where of course everything is higher priced. I used to tip when I got food delivered, as it was customary...at least 15% if the food was on-time and hot and fresh.

In Chicago, the delivery drivers dont have as far to go, but do have to deal with traffic and high gas prices. But most of the places that deliver to my house already charge $2.50-$4.00 for delivery on top of the price of your order.

On a $25.00 order thats already 10-15%, so most of the time I dont tip the driver. Why do I feel like a s*****k? Does anyone else think i'm justified?

  1. Well, it's polite to tip. I don't agree with restaurants charging delivery charges. They want to make money on the delivery. The delivery charge more than likely, unless the owner is nice, it doesn't go to the driver, so the driving is losing money by delivery your food. I would at least give a dollar. However, I always tip at least $5. If I don't want to give a delivery tip, I will just drive myself to the restaurant.


  2. A lot of times the delivery charge does not go to the driver but rather back to the restaurant you ordered from. They say it is to help with the cost of the to go boxes and to go cups and stuff. I always tip on top of the delivery charge because of this. If you really want to know where your money is going you can always ask to speak to a manager next time you place an order and ask where the money goes or you can just tip on top of the delivery charge anyway seeing as you are already feeling bad for not doing it.

  4. You might want to ask if they get the delivery charge first before you decide on the tip. I say this because I work at Pizza Hut as a delivery driver and they charge a $2.50 delivery fee but the drivers do not get that. Or at least we only get a $1 of it so we depend on our tips to put gas back in our cars, and with gas where I'm at at $4.09 a gallon and everyone thinking we get that delivery charge and not tipping us we end up screwed. Our manager only gives us about 18 to 20 hours a week and we get paid minimum wage at that so the cost of keeping up our cars, gas, and time spent on cell phones trying to find a customers house we lose out if we don't get tipped or if we get tipped a little. It may not be the same there being that I'm in Missouri, but it doesn't hurt to ask. They should give you all that info if you ask a manager at the delivery place and if they don't tell you they have something to hide.

  6. First let me say that I worked at a place that did not charge for delivery, so tips were my bread and butter. Now after saying that here is how I fell about your question. If the place that you are getting your food from does charge for delivery I will not tip unless the weather out side is BAD. And with you in Chicago I bet your weather gets bad at times. Thats when I will tip the guy, cause I didn't want to get out in the bad weather so I mad him bring me my food. I must give him something more and when I do its 20% if not more. Now When you know that the place that you are getting your food from is not charging you, then you should always tip. Drivers really don't get paid that much and then you add up the price of gas you must tip. If a driver starts telling the people he works with that you don't tip over and over just see how hot your food will be.
