  1. Frizzles are hardy birds which grow quickly. They are gentle birds and are good layers who don't sit particularly well. They are classed as a heavy breed and are often considered to be purely for exhibition but make good table birds and are perfectly well suited to free range or outdoor pens.

The best chickens breeds for laying are:

        * Warrens (250-300 eggs per year)

        * Rhode Island Reds (200 eggs per year)

        * Black Rocks (250 eggs per year)

        * Marans (200 eggs per year)

        * Bluebelles (200 eggs per year)

        * Orpingtons (200 eggs per year)

I find the maran eggs are the tastiest and the hens in general are quite hardy but do have a tendency to go broody. Warrens are a very resilient bird and very rarely go broody. Perhaps you can do what many keepers do and get a variety of breeds.

A good and healthy, balanced diet with room to roam and exercise and a clean environment provide the best conditions for a laying hen. Check out this site, it's full of useful information on how to keep chickens: http://www.henkeeping.co.uk

  2. get hybrid chickens, they lay more eggs and are lots cheaper, this web site should help, you have to scroll right down to get to the breeds so ignore the first bits

  3. I have ameracaunas--they lay one large to medium sized egg per day and the eggs are green! I also have a brown leghorn and she lays one very large white egg per day. My silkie lays very cute small--but edible--tan egg but she often goes broody so the eggs stop for quite a while. I do not own a rooster and my hens are so much happier without him!! Please give your chickens free range time during the day--they love nothing more!!  Good Luck and LOVE THOSE CHICKENS!!

  4. I love our marans. Great layers, broody but not terribly broody like a silkie, mild mannered, hardy and they lay a gorgeous terra cotta colored egg. We have kept them for years and they never disappoint.

    Same answer I gave yesterday...

  5. Frizzles are beautiful but they are more for a hobbist or a show chicken Rhode Island reds are awesome layer..ours can lay more than one egg a day. hope that helps
