Question:

Stimulus Rebate Stickiness?

Is there anything I can do to claim a rebate?

1. Parents claim me as a dependent

2. I'm 24 years old

3. Made reasonable income last year

I guess my other questions is, would it be beneficial next tax year to not be claimed as a dependent on my parents tax return?

  1. If your parents claim you as a dependent you will not get a check...and it all comes out in the wash anyways...the stimulus check is just a "borrowing" of next years tax money. Your parents will receive more money because of you...maybe they will share....

my 23 y.o. brother is on my parents tax return but they gave him some of their return.

  2. First thing you and your parents need to do is determine if they were entitled to claim you. If you determine they should not have claimed you, 1040X forms need to be submitted.

  3. It would be illegal for your parents to claim you as a dependant if you are over 18, unless you are a full time student and UNDER 24 at the end of the tax year or permanently and totally disabled.

Since you're 24 now, you don't qualify as their dependant unless you're permanently and totally disabled.

  4. Reasonable  Income  ?

What  the  heck  is  that ?   Vague  and  irrelevant .  .  .

The  IRS   works  on  Real  Numbers ,

    Not  some  subjective  adjective .

If  your  parents  provide  more  than  50%  of your  living  costs ,  they  claim  you .

Time  for  YOU  to  start  reading  the  1040  instruction  book  .   .  .

You  did  say  you  were  over  18 ,  right  ?

  5. you can maybe file an amended return form 1040x and claim independent not dependent or if you're not eligible this year they are suppose to have a second chance to qualify next year when you file taxes and still get the rebate if you qualify then,w/o being claimed by anybody next year when you file taxes.

  6. No.

As for next year, if you made more than the exemption amount (currently $3400), you can't be claimed. If less, then it wouldn't make any difference.

  7. casadechongo is wrong! The stimulus rebate checks DO NOT come out of next years taxes. Please go and re-read what is posted on the irs.gov website. It has not affect on the taxes we file in 08!!  If your parents claimed you, they should get the rebate money for you, and give it to you. Have you asked them??

  8. No if they claim you there getting your $300 so  and at age of 24 your Parents cant claim you as a Dependent  Dependents are someone who is Under the age of 18...so i don't know how the IRS lets them do that
