Question:

Stimulus check did not include qualifying child....?

I received my stimulus payment ($600), however I did not get the payment for my qualifying child. I have two children, my ex claims one and I claim the other. (we are not on speaking terms when it comes to financial stuff, so I can't ask him about his... child support arrears issues..)

I heard on the news that this was a common error on these checks and that they were going to be corrected etc....

Is there anything that should be done to ensure that this takes place? Has there been any indication of how long this process will take? Or what it entails?

  1. If the child you claimed was under age 17, as of the end of 2007, you should get an extra $300.  Your return probably had an error regarding this child, but the IRS has identified these returns and is fixing them automatically and sending out additional checks - you should get yours in the next few weeks.  See the last question at  http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,i...

But read the letter you got in late June or early July, or enter your info at https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/IRServlet... and check whether it shows zero for your qualifying child.  It is possible that you were entitled to $300 for yourself, not the maximum $600, so the $600 you got was $300 for you plus the $300 for your child.

  2. Call the IRS thats the only way to know for sure.

  3. Does the letter actually state that you got $600 and that you got $0 for your child?  Many parents only got $300 for themselves and $300 for their children (same total).

Is the child you actually claimed under the age of 17?

When you look at the tax form, is there a check on the box on line 6c?  (That's the box that is the problem being fixed.)  if this is the exact situation for you, the fix will be automatic.
