Question:

Stimulus check--what's the correct amount for an adult?

When I filed my taxes, I was told that I would get $600 for myself and $300 each for my two children. However then I began to hear that some people were only getting $300 for themselves, not $600. I thought perhaps I heard it wrong. I got the check yesterday and I only got $300 for myself. However, when I spoke to my lawyer today (I'm in the middle of a divorce), he said that both he and his wife received $600 a piece. So which is it? I make next to nothing (teaching is a labor of love)...and he's a lawyer! You'd think the poorest of us would get more money! Has anyone heard anything about this?

  1. I am a single woman and I got $600.  Don't know what married folks with children get.

  2. It could be $600....it could be $300...it could be somewhere in between.

Everyone seems to be concentrating on the $600 but it is supposed to be UP TO $600.  People seem to be ignoring the UP TO part.

It all depends on your 2007 tax liability.  If your income was low and/or deductions/credits high, you may qualify for only $300.

The lawyer's income must have been high enough to qualify for the full rebate.

  3. It's between $300 and $600 for eligible adults.  Your stimulus payment is based on your net federal income tax for 2007. If your tax was between $300 and $600, you get back everything you paid. If your tax was less than $300, you get an even better deal, and get $300, even MORE than you paid in. If you paid over $600 though, your rebate is limited to $600.
