  1. Saw Palmetto does help w/ weight gain and is used in products to help women increase bust size. It doesn't work on everyone because we have different reasons for inability to gain weight. If it were me, I'd try it for a couple of months to see how it affected me. It is "safe" for women but sometimes has unexpected results because of its ability to affect hormone levels.

As you say, you've not been able to find a cause for your thinness. Here are some other herbs you might want to consider: Fenugreek seeds, Alfalfa, Irish Moss, Slippery Elm, Agnus Castus, Wild Yam, Kelp. All these have a reputation for weight gain.

Agnus Castus (Vitex) is also a hormone balancer and I've found it to be helpful in all sorts of (seemingly) unrelated problems, such as PMS, acne, anger.

If you are often cold or hot when others in the room are comfortable; if you are hyper active or lethargic; sleepless or sleepy all the time; have an increasing list of food allergies, you might want to have your thyroid looked at. In such case, the most helpful herbs would be Kelp or Irish Moss. Irish Moss is also helpful w/ digestive disorders.

Alfalfa is very nutritious. It has lots of minerals in it and can improve hair and nails. Fenugreek is especially helpful w/ irritable bowel and helps w/ constipation. Wild Yam would be the one to choose if you have immune system problems, as reoccuring infections or rheumatoid arthritis.

Also helpful is a B-complex vitamin supplement.

  2. Saw palmetto is ordinarily taken by men for prostatic disorders and sometimes by men seeking help for preventing or slowing down male-pattern baldness, though the latter use is speculative. The only instance I can think of when women would need to take saw palmetto is if they have an endocrine disorder resulting in excessive testosterone metabolites. Saw palmetto targets testosterone metabolites such as 5-alpha reductase and dht. Some women who have an endocrine disorder may produce an excess of these....

If you want to put on weight in a healthy weigh you could try one of those protein/carbohydrate rich formulas you find in a health shop for that very purpose. They are often called weight gain formulas. Follow the label with regards dosage.

    Best wishes.

  3. No! Saw palmetto will not help you gain weight.
