I just bought a home, approx. 2 years old. There is a bonus room above the garage. There is a seperate a.c. unit(heat pump) for the upstairs. The room always stinks. kind of smells mildewy or something. It always feels warm and muggy upstairs also. What can I do to get rid of this smell? A dehumidifier? I have already cleaned the filter off. Well I vacuumed it. Is that the correct way to do it?

  1. you have to find the mildew and clean it with bleach, it may not be in the a/c does it smell when the a/c isnt on?

  2. It sounds more like you may have a bigger problem the a stinky ac. sounds more like you have a leak and h2o has gotten in the wall and it has cause mold to grow. you should have a contractor check to see that you have proper attic vents and no leaks. It will probably be costly but it is worth it for the health of your family.also cut some holes in walls to find black mold.It must be removed.Proper inspection was not done on this home or upstairs was overlooked.you may have a valid suit against the Realtor also.$$ Wish you the best

  3. They sell deodorizer made to be put in the return air of the a/c.

Vacuuming a non-disposable filter is o.k.,but I prefer the disposable pleated type. That could be part of the problem.
