Stinky Garbage Disposal???

Question

What is the best way to get rid of the stink from our garbage disposal? I bought some product years ago that foamed & you left it in overnight. It helped, but I can"t find anything like it anywhere.

These are all good answers, but I'd like to add one thing to any that you try. Take the splash guard out and scrub it clean. You won't believe how dirty it will be.

If you combine vinegar and baking soda it will foam. Both work well to eliminate the smell. Run the disposal with plenty of cool water after wards. Bleach is an alternative. Stale bread will sop up foul smelling liquids and will grind out. Dried or fresh mint adds a clean smell.

We had this problem.  In the sink drain, there is a rubber gasket that keeps the water and food from splattering up when the garbage disposal is turned on.  Pry out that rubber gasket, and wash it with bleach and a rag.  Wash the top, turn it over and wash underneath.  It's gross.  Then use the rag to wipe out the rim area where the gasket came from.  You don't want to get very far down into the disposal.  Replace the rubber gasket.  Pour some bleach (1/2 cup - 1 cup) down the drain, and let it sit overnight or for several hours before running some water.

Run fresh citrus peels through the disposal.

Not only the citrus peels but the whole lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit will work wonders for your garbage disposal.

a foaming draino product will clear it out, but to make it smell better slice up a lemon and feed it in there with the water running and it will kill off a lot of the bacteria and bad smelling stuff. Mint leaves, basil or others can be used to make a temporary odor change
