Stipe Miocic defends streak successfully against undefeated UFC debutant Shane Del Rosario – UFC News
Stipe Miocic, the surging UFC heavyweight brawler, defended his streak successfully and almost obliterated his Saturday night opponent, Shane Del Rosario, by knocking him down in the second round of the three-round bout held on May 26, 2012.
The duo met on the fight card which was headlined by the championship bout between Junior Dos Santos and Frank Mir. The octagon for the ‘UFC 146: Frank Mir vs. Junior Dos Santos’ pay-per-view was set up at MGM Grand Garden Arena situated in Las Vegas, Nevada,
United States.
The Saturday night showdown was co-headlined by the non-title three-round bout between former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Antonio Silva. Shane, 28, was making his UFC debut and was coming from a successful heavyweight career in UFC’s sister
company Strikeforce.
Both men were on an undefeated win streak and to some extent possessed an almost equal resume. Stipe, 29, was entering in his career’s ninth bout and boasted an undefeated streak with seven of his total eight wins coming via knockout.
His opponent, Shane, also known as ‘No Limits’, possessed a bit upper hand as far as the experience is concerned. Rosario was entering in his career’s 12th bout and collected eight of his total 11 wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
The only difference between the two men was the calibre of opponents fought. Stipe was entering in his third UFC bout and was coming from emphatic wins over two respectable names, Philip De Fries and Joey Beltran.
Shane, on the other hand, was entering the ring after the time lapse of almost 14 months. This facet also shifted the odds substantially in favour of Ohio proud Stipe. The bout kicked off and during the first round it was Del Rosario who dominated the bout
with a great combination of left-right kicks and hooks.
Rosario almost caught Stipe in the first round but somehow the later absorbed the impact of the kick. The bell rang and it seriously aided Stipe in taking a breath and in thinking of a change in the game plan.
With the start of the second round, Stipe grabbed Shane’s leg and took him down on the mat eventually throwing a wave of jabs that rattled Shane. Rosario strived and his efforts came to fruition when he moved himself over Stipe’s back but he did not knew
that it was a bad idea altogether.
Stipe in sheer frustration started to throw elbows that connected Shane’s right eye and left a huge cut over it. The referee intervened at that very moment and halted the bout since Shane was bleeding heavily from the eye cut and the nose.
After the successful streak defence, Stipe stated, “Keep throwing them and stop the fight. He hits hard. If I would have caught more (of his strikes), they would have hurt me.”
With this win Stipe has improved his resume to nine wins in nine bouts whereas Shane has, unfortunately, received his first ever career loss.
