Stirling Moss believes Lewis Hamilton has an outside chance – Formula 1 news
Sir Stirling Moss has claimed that Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has still got an outside chance of winning the 2013 Formula 1 championship.
Talking about the Drivers’ Championship, he said, “Certainly it's possible but I reckon it's an outside chance. Vettel and his team are so good. But Lewis' drive on Sunday was terrific and there's no doubt the team is the equal of any other. He's a really
exciting driver and a late-braker, and I think this result will give him a great kick-off.”
He went onto say that Mercedes will need to continue developing the car throughout the season in order to fight for victories with consistency, which will then allow a chance to the Briton to cause some problems for his rivals.
Moss also said that the expectations of the drivers would have increased after Hamilton’s win in Hungary, a track which was not ideal for the German squad because of its characteristics and high temperature.
Therefore, the former British driver added, “The great thing now is that the team's very different to how they were. Mercedes-Benz is right behind them all through and then Ross Brawn is a tremendous help. If I were a driver today, there are very few people
I'd particularly like to be with, and Ross is one of them.”
Although Hamilton is 48 points behind the championship leader Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, he can turn the tables with some consistent victories after the midseason break ends. Moreover, he would not mind some bad luck for his German rival, who has been
dominating the field for the past three years and is in a terrific position to claim his fourth straight title.
It seems that the new Pirelli tyres have suited Mercedes better than most of the other outfits. There was very less degradation problem in Hungary, which allowed the 2008 world champion to take advantage of his pole position and claim his maiden win with
his new team.
If things continue moving this way, Vettel will definitely be in a difficult situation, as he has been unable to qualify ahead of at least one of the Silver Arrows, which does not allow him to get a clear track ahead.
