Stitch problems

Question

I'm making a simple quilt. The material will not feed evenly with the batting in the middle. Another problem is the reverse stitch will not stitch properly. The stitches are lumpy. My Janome machine is new. Could the factory settings be wrong. I have sewn for years on other machines. First time on this machine and I can't get stitches even. Thanks, Linda
