Question:

Stitches came undone too early after wisdom tooth extraction, what should I do?

I got my two bottom wisdom teeth extracted at 9 AM yesterday. Earlier I noticed there was a lot more pain on one side than the other. Finally, just now I decided to look back there and I noticed that on one side, the side that hurts, there's a hole where I think the stitches should be sowing shut. I'm assuming the gum ripped away from the stitches exposing the hole. I'm not sure what to do, I've looked up wisdom teeth holes from extraction and they seem to be normal, but I don't know if this is. These stitches aren't supposed to dissolve until 7-10 days. This is only the second day and I already have a hole.

  1. luckily it's a weekday.  It's not a huge issue where you need to seek immediate attention, but as soon as the oral surgeon that did you surgery's office is open you need to call and tell them, if they're concerned they will tell you to come in so that it can be taken care of.  I'm assuming they probably gave you pain meds so keep taking them as ordered and put an ice pack on your jaw.  Remember to put a cloth between the skin and the ice pack.  My surgeon recommended using frozen peas as an ice pack as it conforms to the face shape better than a solid pack.  Do not eat anything until you talk to the office and follow the discharge instructions they gave you to a T.  Don't mess with it and talk to them asap as you don't need an infection.

  2. go back and have it sorted out right now if i was you   , x for  your own peace of mind

  3. I wouldn't worry. If it's bleeding put some gauze back there if you have it. You could use cotton balls if you have to. Call your dental office as soon as you can and see if they will restitch it. It may have already started to heal most times in that case they will not give you stitches again. They won't charge you for the visit because it's was through no fault of yours that the original stitches came out. After my last ceserian section (I've had four) one of my staples came out at home. I had a silver dollar sized hole in the incision. It was gross and really scary, but when I went to my OB's office the next day he didn't stitch it up. He just butterflyed it which seemed funny to me because it was so big.
