Question:

Stitching/ Embroidery into kitted work?

I have a red a green scarf that i knitted for a friend and i would like to somehow stitch or embroider some large-ish letters into it.

I used relatively large needles for the scarf and its completely normal garter stitch throughout.

If possible i would like to use the wool to do the stitching to keep the same colours.

Is this possible?

If so any tips/pointers on what needle to use and stitching technique?

or even better if someone has come across a link on-line that would be awesome!

Thanks

(Note i am a 17 year old guy, just got into this sort of thing are more of a bit of fun so I'm not too worried about how professional it looks!!)

  1. You need to stabilize the knit fabric first.  I used and iron on fuse and tear stabilizer on the back side of the garment/item where I wanted to place the embroidery.  Next I hooped a no show mesh and attached the hoop on the machine..  I was advised not to hoop the knit/crochet item,  I placed the knit/crochet piece on the hoop.  I also used a dissolve a way stabilizer on top of the project to keep the stitches from sinking into the knit.    If your machine will baste around the embroidery design, I did that as well.  I used a sharps needle sz 80 but i used embroidery thread.  I'm not sure if yarn would work.  I do know the smaller the number on the thread the thicker the thread is.  The crocheted item was my first project and it isn't always the easiest project to start with. However, with these tips my sweaters turned out great.  Good Luck on your scarf.

  2. i would try using a duplicate stitch ~ which is where you literally take a needle and follow the lines of your stitch with extra yarn into the design you want.  it's pretty simple as long as you sketch it out on a graph and just follow the lines of your original knitting (thus, duplicate :)  )  good luck!
