Question:

Stock Market Question Again??

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I have tried so many times to make sense out of the stock market. Read some books and listened to others even watch some presentations.

For some reason or another I just do not get it???!!!

I am, I believe very humbly an intelligent guy. I sort of understand some parts of it.

Is there anyone that can help me understand this?? I mean all of it from the whole idea to what is actually taking place and what the job of a stock broker is and all the lingos from Nasdaq to the dow jones and bear market and etc.

How to buy how not to buy, just what the whole thing means.

I do not want to do anything with stocks and such, I would just like to know what all the fuss is about, and I would love to be able to understand this!!

Please help anyone, give me your own words not some link or some copy paste, I can find that for myself.

Will post this question twice, the best answer will recieve both best answers, equaling 20 points.

Thank you in advance.....

  1. Hi,

I have to agree with Victor that your question is too broad and you need to specify what you would like to know.

But the main idea of the stock market is to provide a place for companies to raise money for their operations, various projects and so on. Firstly, a company issues shares and sells them on a primary market and receives money from people who this way become shareholders of the company. In fact, shareholders are the owners of the company and the sum of their shares is the value of the company. Then, they can trade their shares on a secondary market-stock exchange and thus the shareholders of the company can change.

There is an indefinite number of approaches to determining when to sell and buy shares. You can analyze the business performance of a company the shares of which you are trading (which I prefer), or you can decide on the basis of the previous performance of particular shares on the market or you can just follow the feeling in you gut (I do not recommend this unless you are Warren Buffet). And a stock broker is a person to whom you give your orders concerning sale or purchase of stocks because you may not be able to make the transaction on your own (depends on the type of market).

Concerning that bear market remark, there are two types of markets - bear and bull. When the values of shares go up, we can say that a market is bullish. But when they go down in general (like now), we have a bear market.

And Dow Jones is an index which provides information about an average price of shares comprised in it. Let's say DJ Industrial Average is one of the oldest indices and its value is an average price of shares of 30 most traded companies in the US. Indices are used as general indicators of the way the market goes.

I hope this was at least a bit helpful and if you want to know more, define your interest more specificaly.
