Okay say I buy 100 pepsi shares at 28.48 a piece. There's no way I can lose the shares right? To profit I'd just have to wait and wait until the value of each share goes past the price I bought them for right? So I can't really lose money unless I sell them when there worth less than what I bought them for? I appreciate the help :)

  1. No, there is no way you are going to lose the shares, even if they bankrupt (not likely) you will still own the shares even if they are worth nothing. If they merge or are acquired by another company, then you will own shares in that company. If they are acquired then the pepsi shares may no longer exist, but as I said, you will have shares in the new company.

  2. u only lose money if the share, lets say, goes down to 20.00 and you sell. you dont lose the shares until you sell them.

  3. You've got it right... sometimes the " waiting" is the hardest part...because maybe you WILL see the value of your account go DOWN.

...but if you're confidant in your selection, you just hold on..or even buy more...

Selling... 99 percent of the time is just as instantaneous as when you bought the shares...

Good luck with the Pepsi !

  4. While it is most likely, especially with large companies like PepsiCo, that in the long run you will make money, there are scenarios in which you may lose money.  The most obvious is if the firm goes bankrupt.  You would lose all your money in this scenario; not likely in Pepsi's case but not impossible (investors used to think Enron was going to be around forever).  Another possibility is that Pepsi stays below $28.48 for the next 50 years.  GM's shares are currently trading at their 1950s levels.

If you want to sell your shares their shouldn't be a problem with liquidity.  5,769,424 shares of Pepsi were traded today...100 shares aren't gonna be difficult to sell for the market price.  If, instead, you were trying to sell 2,000,000 shares at once, you would have to sell your shares at a drastically lower price than the market price because people on the other side of that bet would be worried that someone wants to dump 2 million shares at once.
