Question:

Stock share dividend question?

I looked up a stock that says latest dividend-.80% , yield-0.0, ex-date 11/17/08. What exactly does that mean? Does it yield dividends or not. And how much? is that 80 cents a share or 80 cents for every dollar I invest?

  1. emc does not pay any dividends at all.

Ex date is the last date you buy the stock to get the dividend. Or the day you need to hold the stock to get  the dividend

  2. see everything and stay out

  3. If it actually says the dividend is .80%, then it is a stock dividend. That is why the yield is listed as 0. For every 100 shares of stock, you would receive another 8/10 of a share.

EMC does not pay a cash dividend and has not announced a stock dividend. What are you reading?

EDIT:  I looked at www.thestreet.com and it does say.80. It is a mistake. They have not declared a regular or one-time dividend. Also, it does not say .80%. Just .80, which would be $0.80 per share if it were correct.

  4. Go to Yahoo Finance and put in the symbol EMC.   The company clearly does not pay a dividend.  And a dividend is not set for the future.  I am asking that you satisfy yourself by going to Yahoo Finance and getting a quote for symbol "EMC."  O.K. ?

  5. We could better answer this question if we could see the actual stock. What is the symbol?

A yield is in percentage and a dividend is in dollars and cents per share, but your posting shows the dividend in percentage and no percentage for yield. It is confusing.

Also your ex dividend date of 11/17/2008 that's 5 months away. Most companies don't declare dividends until about 1 month before they pay them.

EDIT: OK ----  I see on www.thestreet.com where it says .80 dividend  (not .80%) If this is correct (and I'm not saying it is because of the dividend date being November of this year {that is awfully far out for a dividend declaration}) then this would be an 80 cent per share dividend ( if you own 100 shares they would pay you $80; if you own 240 shares they would pay you $192.  ----- and I can understand why there is no yield percentage. This dividend has not been paid yet and the company has not paid a dividend this  year.

I hope the information you got here from myself and others was helpful.

  6. I looked up EMC, theres no dividend being paid. Check again you probably looked up the wrong stock.
