Stock stereo works fine, aftermarket does not?

I have a '90 Ford Ranger that I bought new. It has a factory AM/FM cassette stereo with 4 speakers and no amp. The speakers on the drivers side have been cutting in and out, so, I decided to replace the whole system with a CD player and new speakers. After hooking up the new head unit, with an aftermarket plug in wire harness, I wanted to be sure it worked before going any farther. I put the key in the acc. position and turned it on and it worked fine. Then, I moved it to the run position with the engine off. It was still fine. Then, I started the engine and let the key go back to the run position where it normally is while driving, and, there was no sound. The head unit still had power as the display was lit up and all the functions were working, but there was no sound. When I turned the engine off, the sound returned. After messing around with it for a few hours, I had to head off to work. So, I unplugged everything and put the stock radio back in, hoping for the best. It worked fine-except for the drivers side speakers.

The whole system is from Pioneer and I bought it at a real stereo store, so, It's not some $50.00 P.O.S. head unit and $10.00 speakers from Wally World. I've done quite a few stereo installs in the past 20 years or so, but have never had this happen.

Any help would be appriecated. I will choose a best answer. Thanks.

  1. disconnect any orange wire if you have any of them connected and see if your problem goes away. Keep in mind that if you have a bad speaker out of the 4 that are in there, most aftermarket stereos will sence a dead short in a speakers voice coil and stop all volume to all speakers as a form of protection to the cd player. Hope it helps
