Question:

Stockinette stitch?

The last few projects I've knitted in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) do not have the nice rolled edge like they're supposed to. I've been knitting baby hats, and some of them have a rolled edge, but the last few I've made don't. Anybody know why? Is it a tension problem?

  1. Yes, the higher the tension, the more it will roll. You probably knit too losely\use too large needle size. Also depends on the yarn. Resilient yarns like wool and cotton roll more. Rayon or silk probably won't roll at all. Tightly spun yarns roll more than loose soft yarns.

Answer 1 says exactly the opposite of what is true: garter stich doesn't roll, it's the same on both sides, so can't roll. Stockinette does :)

  2. I agree that the cast on was too tight.

  3. Well it's kind of a funny thing. If your guage is really tight it won't roll and if it's loose it won't curl. It could also be that your cast on is tight and that is keeping them from rolling.

  4. knit one purl one does not produce a rolled edge, knitting every stitch (garter) does.  stockinette does not produce a rolled edge and is not supposed to. knit one row purl the next is a straight knitting and it always produces a rolled edge stockinette is knit one st. purl the next stitch.
