I need a little help with this problem:

2Na2O2 + 2H2O -----> O2 + 4NaOH

If 42.0 mols of sodium peroxide are used, how many mols of sodium hydroxide will be produced?

If you can show your steps, that would be very helpful! =D Thanks.

  1. The way to do this problem is to use a mole ratio of Sodium Peroxide to Sodium Hydroxide. Looking at the coefficients in the balanced equation, you can see that there are 2 mols of Na2O2 for every 4 mols of NaOH produced. Setting up an equation to work this out would look something like this:

    (42.0 mols Na2O2) * (__ mols NaOH / __ mols Na2O2).

Fill in the number of mols for each compound and see if this gets you your answer.

  2. First you have to find your molar ratio.

    - 4 mol Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) / 2 mol Sodium Peroxide (Na202)

Then, you multiply the molar ratio to the given amount.

    - 42.0 mol Na2O2  x  (4 mol NaOH / 2 mol Na2O2)

    - The Na2O2s cancel and your left with:

       42.0 mol x (4 mol NaOH / 2)

    - Then, you just multiply and divide.

       ~ 42.0 mol x 4 mol NaOH = 168 mol NaOH

       ~ 168 mol NaOH / 2 = 84.0 mol NaOH

  3. 42 mol NaO2  X  (4 mol NaOH / 2 mol NaO2)= 84 mol NaOH

For every 42 mol of NaO2 you have X mol of NaOH.

Looking at your balanced equation, for every 2 molecules of NaO2 you have 4 molecules of NaOH.

Using 4 mol NaOH/2 mol NaO2 as the converting factor.

    I think...

  4. ok so this is how you solve this problem:

you take 42 grams of Na2O2 and you find the grams of it, you then put it over Na2O2, it should be 77.98, you then multiply that by 4 miles of NaOh over 2 moles of Na2O2and multiply that by the grams of NaOH which should be 40 it should look like this: 42g Na2O2/77.98*4moles NaOH/2 moles Na2O2*40.00g/1 mol NaOH

you then multiply the top all together, 42*4*40.00/77.98/2/1 and that should give you your answer.

    i really hope i helped!!
