http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Sørensen-c34994, the Stoke City goalkeeper, has been ruled out of the Denmark squad ahead of the European Championships due to an injury.
The 35-year-old suffered a back injury during training and has now been ruled out of the European Championships squad for Denmark. Stephan http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Anders-Lindegaard-c5553 and Kasper Schmeichel have been announced as his replacements.
Former player and current manager Morten Olsen confirmed the news of Sorensen’s unavailability for the European competition. He revealed the goalkeeper had suffered a back injury because of which he would now not be participating in the Euros 2012.
Olsen confirmed:
“Thomas has suffered an injury in his back. It means unfortunately that it is unlikely that he will recover in time to be available for matches for the finals."
The Stoke City stopper himself was extremely disappointed with having to miss out of the European Championships, especially since this would have been the last time he would have featured for the Danish international side.
However, he revealed he more than understood the manager’s concerns and final decision to leave him out of the squad since it would be risky taking an injured goalkeeper. Sorensen said he respected the manager’s decision to leave him out of the team because
of his injury.
Sorensen revealed while speaking to reporters:
“I am deeply unhappy about it. I've been with the team for most of qualifying, and had looked forward to my fifth finals with the national team.
But I also understand that it is a big risk to go with an injured goalkeeper and therefore I respect Morten's decision, even if it hurts.”
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Denmark-c2884 national side manager praised the injured goalkeeper’s replacement Kasper Schmeichel for his hard work throughout the previous season, which had initially earned him a place in the 23-man squad for the European Championships.
He revealed he was not too concerned with the fact that Schmeichel had not yet made an appearance for the senior side, Olsen was confident the goalkeeper would impress.
Olsen said:
“He has worked seriously on his development as a goalkeeper, and we followed him closely during the season for Leicester.”
