Asamoah Gyan, then, restored the visitors’ lead with a thumping shot early in the second half but Carew scored again to bring his side level and, with just four minutes of stoppage time remaining, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermaine-Pennant-c18364 free kick into the net to give his side a hard-fought win over Sunderland.
Both the managers had made changes to their teams after the midweek fixtures. Tony Pulis recalled http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Mensah-c18877 to the starting line-up.
Despite playing with five defenders, the home side fell behind within the first two minutes, as some sloppy defending by Huth allowed Richardson enough space inside the box to slam home.
It almost got worse for the home side immediately when a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Asamoah-Gyan-c6791 could not finish from the rebound.
Richardson again came close to doubling the lead but a swerving long shot from 30 yards was just inches off the target.
Stoke City had four former Sunderland players in their starting line-up and one of them almost pulled a goal back as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-Higginbotham-c10207’s acrobatic effort slalomed into the side netting.
Stoke, however, pulled a goal back and it was no surprise that it came from a Rory Delap throw-in. Delap’s long throw-in was not dealt by the Sunderland defenders and the ball looped into the air and Carew tapped in from close range to bring his side level.
Just seconds after the restart, Sunderland restored the goal advantage when Gyan latched onto a lobbed pass and beat two defenders before slotting home.
Stoke threw everything but the kitchen sink at their opponents after going behind and Sunderland looked increasingly vulnerable on the set pieces.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andy-Wilkinson-c6057 as he reduced his backline to just three men, throwing more men into the attack.
It was a risk that did not pay instant dividends as Sunderland almost scored another when Richardson squeezed in a thunderous strike from a tight angle but Begovic was on hand to make the save.
Stoke were the next to attack as Etherington’s dazzling run into the attacking third drew a foul from John Mensah and the resulting free kick was almost put into his own net by a Sunderland defender. Pennant’s free kick was a constant threat as he delivered one masterpiece after another, but his strikers failed to guide the ball in.
Stoke, however, got back in the game late in the second half when another free kick by Pennant was headed home by Carew to bring his side level with just eight minutes left to play.
Robert Huth, then, stoke the limelight late into stoppage time when he slipped the ball past http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Craig-Gordon-c9476 from another stinging Pennant free kick.
It was a thrilling game but Steve Bruce was left fuming after the game, as he thought both of Stoke City’s equalizers were illegal.
