I posted an item that cost £95 and was told by post office staff I did not need insurance. It went missing and I put in a claim. They have paid me £36 by cheque to cover this item and postage, saying they cant pay more. I feel this is wrong I am £60 out of pocket what can I do?

  1. Royal mail staff don't usually say you shouldn't insure something ,why would they not want to make more money out of postage insurance?

If you told them the value they would have advised you to send it special delivery which has £500 insurance. Recorded only goes up to £32 so to get £36 you are quite lucky.

You'll know what to do next time.

  2. What method of postage did you use?

If you just sent it standard unrecorded first class, then I'm afraid you are stuffed and the money is gone.

If you sent it recorded, did you declare any value on the package?

  3. you were wrongly advised - on standard mail the maximum you cna claim back is £36 (10 time fists class stamp - irrespective of amount of postage paid).

for items more valuable than £36 the only sae way is to send them special delivery where compensation is £500 or pay more for higher levels.  alternatively standard parcels can be compensated higher by paying price giving levels of £100 to £500.
