Question:

Stomach virus and teething....?

My 9 months old has come down with a nasty stomach virus and we're quite sure teething at the same time. We're done with the vomiting and his fever has finally broke but he's just started with explosive diarrhea and has started a runny nose and cough; he also cries and whines quite a bit. My son is such a happy little man and very active and its hard to watch him do nothing but mope around. I noticed the last two days he also has been biting his fingers and looking in his mouth I see white spots where new teeth are looking like they might be coming in. He broke his first tooth fine but I see trouble on the horizon. Since he cannot go back to daycare for the rest of the week, its just the two of us at home. Any remedies I can use to help soothe him during this horrible week? Anything for the teething or the stomach virus? I would appreciate any help or advice!!! We're both so tired!

  1. When my daughter was little she went through the same thing and the Dr. put her on what he called the B.R.A.T. diet, Breads, Rice, Applesauce and Toast.  This helped her little tummy.  Also Pedialite to replace the electtolytes.  For the teeth we always used cold wash rags for her to chew on and cold carrots and popcicles and sometimes a cold teething ring.  Hope this helps

  2. My daughter had a hard time with her teeth erupting, too.  They drool alot, and some goes in the stomach, which gives them the diarrhea.  Keep him hydrated, Pedialite.  Keep ointment on his behind, a cloth diaper with no rubber pant over it will help his skin to breath if he gets a rash.

Cold things in his mouth helps.  Does he have some teething rings that have a liquid center?  Put them in the fridge or freezer, the cold will feel good on his gums.  A mini bagel to gum, just watch him and make sure he doesn't swallow too much.

Also... our oldest, when her teeth came in, it was a bid deal.  Fever, crying, diaper rash, taking two to three days for a tooth to come in.  Our middle daughter, hers popped in like popcorn.  No problems at all.

When they lost their teeth, they lost them the same way.

The oldest would cry and make a big deal about her loose teeth, they would hang by threads and she was affraid to pull them out.  Our middle daughter, her teeth came out fast, no problems.

So keep an eye on that.

Our youngest she had minor problems when they came in and minor problems when they fell out.

I know it's not fun when they don't feel well.  what did your pediatritian say about tylenol, a bit helps.
