  1. One of the reasons that it's important is that the "dance" or circle of stones pre-dates the pyramids by over a thousand years.  The people of Briton (Roman name) were supposed to be barbarians who had little culture, yet here is a stone circle that is a very accurate calender!  It shows that ancient Britons did have knowledge of science and astronomy, and also engineering in order to erect this monument.

  2. it was important, because as an early agricultural society ,they needed a calendar to know when to plant crops. This knowledge was so critical to the rise of early agricultural societies that it was usually imbued with a religious or Shamanistic ritual.

  3. The theories are just that, ‘theories’.  Recent archaeological research shows there lots of overlooked facts which are not included in any of them. The idea that it was a calendar, was used for predicting eclipses or served some other astronomical function is not proven, in fact they are modern myths that many people believe because they have been repeated so many times, and will be again in answer to your question. There is only one unambiguous alignment, the otherwise symmetrical monument sits on the axis of the solstice; its focus is towards midwinter, that’s the direction in which the dominant Great Trilithon was designed to face. It’s a monumental piece of architectural design, a structure built by a culture whose beliefs are long lost to us. However that need not imply  that we can’t know anything about their mindset, there are many of clues in the archaeological record, read, and read more, but be wary of anyone who claims to know what Stonehenge was ‘for’.
