Stools in an 11 week old boy. Is this normal???

My son is 11 weeks old, and his stools over the past two weeks have completely changed. He is formula fed, and he has never had any problems before. However, within the past two weeks he has gone from having normal stools to very liquid stools. He does not seem to be in any pain and he is just as happy as he could ever be. Do I need to get this checked out by a doctor or is it ok? Is this normal?

  1. Formula-fed babies’ stools should be firmer than breastfed babies but they should not be any firmer than a peanut butter consistency. very loose and watery stools could indicate illness. The danger here for a baby is dehydration, which can show up as a dry mouth and a noticeable reduction in urine output (fewer than six wet diapers in 24 hours). Call your doctor if your newborn's stools seem watery or loose or if they often occur at other times besides after feeding.

i would call the doctor just to be on the safe side.

  2. I would go ahead and call the doctor and let her know. Especially since it has been lasting a few weeks. I am not sure what it could be. Your stools are a very important indication of your health so it is good that you are noticing the changes.

  3. The consistency of the stools changes all the time.  As long as it is not black, or does not have blood in it, and he is not experiencing much more frequent stools, he is fine.

  4. My son is about 4 months now and his stools are still changing. I wouldn't worry too much about it. They say that babies are still getting used to formula or whatever they are eating and their tummies are learning to digest still. It will probably continue to change until they start solid foods. If he is in any pain or you see something really unusual, do call the doc. If you are still worried, it never hurts to call the doc or nurse. That is what they are there for!! Good luck! Congrats!
